Lockheed P-38 Lightning

The Lockheed P-38 LIGHTNING was a fast and heavily-armed American long-range fighter aircraft from World War II. This unusual twin-engine plane had a gondola with a pilot's cabin placed between two fuselages. The so-called "flying frame" provided very good performance, which resulted in a long production period lasting from 1941 to 1945 and an excellent number of victories by American pilots. The aircraft was withdrawn from service only in 1965. It was used throughout the war and some of the most successful ace pilots of the war flew it in multiple theatres of the war.
